My JHymn Help and Info now explains what to do before updating to iTunes 4.7.1. I will build this change (removing 'iods' atoms) into a future update of JHymn, and possibly add some other improved scrubbing to try, as best as I can, to avoid future issues like this when iTunes 4.7.2 or 4.8 or whatever comes out.
Much more subtle markings of purchased files than these 'iods' atoms are possible, however, so I expect this will be an ongoing battle.

The offending atom seems to be 'iods'. If you update your JHymn "Unwanted Atom" preferences thus:
(apID)
(cprt)
(iods)
That should get you over the current issue with iTunes 4.7.1. You'll have to check off ".m4a" among the file types checked to re-scrub your old files.
This is a preliminary early report... I wiped my iPod clean and am reloading it now. There've been no warning messages about unauthorized files so far.
The "AppleMark" issue that someone else brought up seem to be something buried within the cover art ('covr') atom. This DOES NOT seem to CURRENTLY pose a problem, but it's certainly something to look into. Of course, deleting the 'covr' atom would get rid of this identifying mark, but having to throw out your cover art it a bit of a high price to pay, so we'll all have to look into modifying this away while still keeping cover art intact. |

| I have several m4p's (from the Canadian iTMS) that I've decrypted with FairKeys and JHymn. Removed only cprt and apID atoms, iods is still there. They all play perfectly fine in iTunes 4.7.1. Can anyone explain why? |

A few, not many, but a few of my purchased songs that had 'iods' still worked fine. In my case I didn't find anything that wouldn't play in iTunes, as some people have reported, I only had a problem with songs that got deleted from my iPod.
For the most part the difference between the hundreds of songs that were deleted and the dozen or so that were not deleted was the presence of 'iods' -- an atom which does not appear in any of my ripped-from-CD files, and which appears completely unnecessary for proper playback.
For the few songs that were purchased songs with 'iods' that were not deleted from my iPod, I can only guess that the particular contents of those 'iods' atoms were somehow safer or less identifying than it was in the other files. |

MP3 files are safe. You'll have no problems with those, and don't have to worry about fixing anything now, or about updating to iTunes 4.7.1. You can be 99% sure than MP3 files will remain forever safe. |

FP --
Would it not also be prudent to add (geID) to the list of atoms to be removed as a matter of course from iTMS purchased files? This atom does not seem to exist in other AAC fules, right?
Also, just curious, what does the (iods) atom do? As far as I can tell it is somehow linked to the "Parental Advisory" graphic that appears in the "Get Info" box of some iTMS tracks, but I am not sure if that is the full story.
Thanks for the great work. |

'geID' is already built-in without a need to specify it. By time my next update comes along, 'iods' will be built-in too, as are a lot of other atoms you don't see in the "Unwanted atoms" field.

To be honest, I don't really know what 'iods' is supposed to do, just that none of my home-ripped files has 'iods', removing 'iods' didn't break anything, and removing it solved the iTunes 4.7.1 problems. That's good enough for me. (Cavalier attidtude? You betcha )

A couple things: It's pretty obvious that Apple is reading these forums and reacting in an attempt to thwart your efforts. So perhaps it's time to start playing (poker) and not tip your hand so easily?
APPLE: If you continue to pull shit like this, I will stop buying music from you and go back to the CD stores. Once I have the music, it is my right to be able to play it without worry of you keeping iTunes in business. What if McCartney shuts you down? Do I lose the ability to play all the music that I've bought? BS. Stop fucking with us. |

It's hard not to tip your hand if you're doing open source code, so I'm sort of resigned to the fact that this will be a cat-and-mouse game where someone at Apple can easily know what we're up to here.
It also would have been hard to be stealthy telling people about 'iods'. I can get the news out to change your JHymn prefs much faster than I can release a new version of JHymn, and thus try to save as many people as possible the annoyance of fixing these problems after running 4.7.1 instead of fixing them beforehand. |

I did not update to iTUNES 4.7.1 yet. Instead, I checked m4a files purchased from allofmp3 with JHymn "Open as Text" function, and they have an iods atom, too (see below). I wonder if they will work with iTUNES 4.7.1 ??? Should I just install 4.7.1 and check it out?

Allofmp3 sells music in AAC format? I didn't know that! (I knew that you could choose encoding rates, but I thought it was all MP3.)
The 'iods' atom itself doesn't seem to be the problem, but something that Apple stores inside of that atom. Chances are, if you don't mind conducting the experiment, your allofmp3 purchases will be fine with 4.7.1. Even a few iTunes purchases with 'iods' worked okay with 4.7.1 for me.
On the other hand, as far as I can tell, using JHymn to delete all of your 'iods' atoms ahead of time does no harm. |

OK, I updated from iTunes 4.7 to 4.7.1. On my iPod, I have a mix of AAC files (m4a), protected files (m4p), and 'ordinary' MP3's. Some of the m4a files were purchased from allofmp3 (and therefore tot scrubbed), others were created some time ago with Hymn, the newer ones were created with JHymn (which is the best free application I've ever seen, really. Many thanks to FutureProof!). Unwanted atomes were set to (apID) and (cprt), later I added (covr). Here are my test results, which I do not understand at all:
1. m4a files purchased from allofmp3 seem to be ok, as FP assumed
2. m4a files created with Hymn could not be played via iTunes (files are stored on iPod) - "the computer is not authorized ..."
3. m4a files created with JHymn were OK (even with 'iods' atom) .... hmm...
4. Protected m4p are ok, as expected
5. iTunes did not delete any file on my iPod (as far as I can see)
6. I then deleted one m4a file (from the file type unter item #2 above) from the iPod, ran JHymn on it, and imported it back into iTunes and IPod - result: playable, even with 'iods' .... hmm ...
7. The files which iTunes refuses to play (#2), do play well on the iPod when it is disconnected from the PC - strange, isn't it?
Maybe I did something completely wrong or stupid, .... but maybe FP understands....
Again, thanks very much for your app and support.

Jhymn works like a charm but I'm still faced with one problem.
How do I find which files I need to scrub? Obviously I know the ones that won't play need them but they're all m4a now. I'm not to keen on scrubbing my entire library so I'm sorta going by date at the moment. Anyway to search by atom? |
