The only problems I've had so far with Amazon are:
- hard to find something specific. For example, I looked up Marilyn Manson today and was presented with everything he did, plus all of the tribute albums. Even when I refined my search for a specific song, it still brought up well over 100 entries that I had to sort through.
- there were obvious oversights to erroneous tracks that didn't belong out there. For example, same artist, they list *every* track from "Antichrist Superstar", including every 4 second blank track the album has on it. I laughed out loud about someone actually paying 99 cents for 4 seconds of silence.
I know these are nit-picky items, but at the same time, I've gotten used to the smooth interface and ease of use with the iTunes store.
With time, hopefully this will change. |

I consider those issues the price we pay for DRM free, higher quality music. I love the iTunes store and really don't like the idea of not shopping there (hint, hint, Apple, I don't REALLY want to boycott your store but am going to anyway, thanks), but, I can't tolerate this latest escalation. Just out of principle I will not shop there anymore which is a real shame. If and when they drop the DRM, then I'll drop my boycott. So that's my challenge to Apple. You don't want utilities out there that can remove DRM from your music, fine. Utilities are gone even though I consider them fair use. (And we both know what was said about fair use, don't we...I was not impressed with that, either) So here's my challenge. DROP THE DRM from your music. Keep it on video if you must as I know you're trying to grow that business. But drop it on ALL music and just sell straight out kick ass tracks. Business will go up. You have the best experience on your store, but, you are going to continue to get SLAMMED by the competition if you keep this nonsense up. So there it is. Good luck with that. _________________ READ THE FAQ |

I find it very entertaining that mr. Jobs (you still want your job...? ) yelled out loud and clear that they want to drop DRM, but then on the other side they never do anything to make it happen.
Reason is simple if you ask me: The second they drop DRM from their music, they also remove the bond that has always been their moneymakers: the iPods
Without DRM, iTunes music can be played on any device capable of playing AAC (m4a) files, meaning lots of people will stop buying their iPods also, and that can cause a chain-reaction that they don't want to see happen. After all, it's the hardware they make money from, not the software!
So, I guess it's for the money, as it's always been.
And while we're at it: the key to all of this, is the music companies themselves. If they go away from iTunes and instead choose others like Amazon (as Amazon gives them more freedom to set prices as they want) then Apple would have two options:
1. Close down iTunes Store
2. Remove DRM and co-operate with the companies, giving them more control on prices and more profit on sales.
I hope for the latter! |

Actually, I don't purchase much from them like I used to. Even then, I did it through free song credits from gimmicks and stuff. Rarely did iTunes ever get money from me - like $30-40 at the most.
Two examples
1. Pepsi promotion in 2004 and 2005
I would look under the cap without opening and before buying to see if it's a winner
2. 7-11 Slurpee in 2005
One free song for every Slurpee. Some had higher prizes. I won a 15 song credit from one of the Slurpees.
But I still participate in the free songs of the week, some of them are damn good. And ones I really don't like, I'll either delete, or ones I know are bad ahead of time I won't download at all. But some really good ones can also be iTunes Plus sometimes.
But why participate in the free downloads? Not only is it free and legal, but I get the gratuity of unlocking the music against the wishes of Apple. It's my way of showing the customer is always right. _________________ JHymn, rest in peace! You will be missed. |

Sorry to hear that. It's not what one would consider a pleasant experience. There's really nothing you can do except what they demand in the C&D. Looks like Apple's had enough. So much for fair use. Ready to join my boycott yet? _________________ READ THE FAQ |

| And, based on a few PM's I've gotten, I should probably clarify that I received the letter via email at mosspile@gmail.com - neither via "paper" mail, nor at my primary address. |

How did they know you were sending FFH in emails?? Does Apple spy on people's emails??
I'm not worried, because I don't send forbidden stuff through emails. Just curious. _________________ I like to rock!!

He offered in a public forum to email it to those that asked for it. While it definitely sucks, I can see why Apple took action unfortunately. _________________ READ THE FAQ |

| Well, I kind of made a post in the TUAW weblog promising a copy to anyone who asked me in email. Also, my address is in the readme. This is specifically a throwaway address - I've hardly made it a secret. |

Thanks.
You know, this may not have happened if you made this forum invisible to everyone but registered members, but that's water under the bridge.
A spy would have joined and spilled the beans,
OK, they won. But I won't buy any DRMed songs. _________________ I like to rock!!

markofkane, it would not surprise me at all if one or two of the registered users who never posted are apple employees using the account to look at the forum. _________________ I'll try being nicer if you'll try being smarter. |

Moss,
While I'm not encouraging any way shape or form to break the C&D, how would they enforce via email? Do they actually have a way to track you, or do they say, "We will get Google to close your email address?" _________________ JHymn, rest in peace! You will be missed. |

Apple visits the site regularly. And I have no problem with that. This is the first C&D we've gotten over the years. Obviously they're getting more aggressive in their approach to protecting their DRM. I just wish they understood that this site is strictly about fair use and allowing LEGAL PURCHASERS to free their LEGALLY PURCHASED music from the shackles of DRM. That's always been the mission of this site. It's never been about being able to pirate or share music. Oh well. It's too late now. The balance has shifted and will be impossible to regain. They either drop their DRM or they don't get any future sales from me. That's how it goes. _________________ READ THE FAQ |

| is this mean that apple will change the algorithm and then try to convince us to install a new update by claiming security flaws? |
