"DVD" Jon Johansen takes donations!
Other than the much appreciated and already sufficient iTunes gift certs I've already been sent for use in JHymn testing -- thank you all for that -- trying to use donations to motivate me into faster iTunes 6 cracking would be a rather futile gesture since (1) I prefer to remain anonymous and not take money, and (2) unless you paid me enough to quit my job and study reverse engineering full time, I'd never be able to come through on anything less than a geological time scale. We'd might be facing iTunes 27 before I'd cracked iTunes 6.
DVD Jon is another matter. He knows this reverse engineering stuff, and has already expressed an interest in attacking iTunes 6 -- if for no other reason than to get his own SharpMusique project up to date. Jon's work on that should certainly help JHymn get going again, but it might not be sufficient in and of itself. Perhaps we can motivate Jon to get around to solving iTunes 6 issues sooner than he might have otherwise, and more completely than he might if he's only trying to get SharpMusique working again.
I think it would be worth it for some of use to not only donate to Jon through his web site, but combine those donations with our heart-felt requests to help revive JHymn again.
Of course, please be careful in any such requests not only to be polite, but to respect that Jon is now working in the US, therefore potentially subject to the DMCA, and even given his own public announcement that he wants to work on iTunes 6 when he gets the time, please realize he might need some wiggle room for legal technicalities and plausible deniability. In my non-lawyerly opinion, I think that the interoperability clause of the DMCA should be sufficient to make such work perfectly legal -- but would you want to fight that out in court if you could avoid it?
I think I'll go make my donation now.

i think donations can be made and not have traces.
the site ripdifferent.com has a dvd extractor and the way they take donations and remain anonymous and no traces is have their friend collect the money and then hand it to the person doing the dvd cracking work.
some things like paying for the itunes test accounts has to be done with itunes certs.
but for other things the anonymous party can pay for their isp bill, mac,pc to do the work on and an ipod to test key extraction will take real money.
so the way i think it may work is we donate to a middle man called friend then the friend draws the money from paypal to bank account and hands the cash to anonymous user called cracker.
the cracker uses the money to supliment the income and to pay for equipment.
when we donate then to not raise a flag (rip different asks us not to mention the project in subject rather prefers "gift") make sure not mention the project in the subject in the paypal donations.
by having the friend pay the cracker cash it breaks the trace link.
basically financial donations to buy equipment mac,pc,ipods and other hardware and itunes certs to pay for test accounts.
my idea sounds good but i dont know if it would work. |

Since Jon does other stuff besides DRM-related things, you can always just say you're making a donation to support things like his snd123 project. I don't think giving to Jon is a risky proposition -- I'm more concerned about Jon's exposure to risk than about anyone donating money to him. |

A conversion rate of 1% isn't good. It looks like only 20 people have donated to Jon's paypal account, yet 2500 seem to have read this thread.
Come on people - I'm sure some of you have already made use of Jon's work - or do you just take stuff you can find for free???

I'm new here and I appreciate Jon's work. I've spent about $50. at ITMS since the advent of iTunes 6.x, and so I sent him an equal amount with my thanks for past efforts...period. If a new workaround comes to pass, I'll certainly send more.

You see that button that says quote? Yeah, it allows you to quote people in a fancy little fashion that PHPBB has built-in to it. _________________ "Hooray! I'm Helping!" - Dr. Zoidberg while being held Hostage. |

| Well, I am new to all this iTune stuff. I got most of my music from Napster. But now the kids. I have two and bought them iPods for Christmas. Just learned about when you buy an iTune song, it really isn't yours to do what you wish with. Then there is the issue of having the song associated with the computer and the iPod associated with one computer. Should have gotten just mp3 players! I will support the work here when there is something I can use. Count me in when 6 is cracked. |

I just gave $150. This is a very worthwhile cause.
I know money isn't everything, but it's something. At the very least an expression of gratitude. |

| Another $50 but I'm sure there could be loads more if everyone who'd every had the pleasure to be able to enjoy "fair use" would chip in to. |

I would have donated more, but could not afford it.
It would be cool if someone could crack it. They are so smug that no0one can crack it. _________________ I like to rock!!

| On the one hand I'm happy to donate $50 to support people who are working on this. On the other hand I really can't get a good sense of whether or not people are really working on this! I don't want to donate to a black hole... |
